There are many artists that could symbolize Jazz. However, there is only one artist who can symbolize the Birth of Cool. And that artist is Miles Davis. Who would have thought that by this year, Miles Davis album "Kind of Blue", released in 1959, has sold over four million copies. Hot damn!
Born Miles Dewey Davis III on May 26, 1926, Miles Davis was an American trumpeter, composer and a bandleader. Unhappy with the increasingly virtuoso instrumentalism that dominated the bebop scene of the time, Mr. Davis set out to create a group that included the use of tubas and even French horns, which was unheard of at the time. Similar in the way Ella Fitzgerald used her voice as an instrument; the group´s aim was to achieve a sound similar to the human voice. Through carefully arranged compositions and by emphasizing a relaxed, melodic approach to the improvisations Mr. Davis achieved this.
Sure he was brash and controlling, but most artistic types were. However, many well-known musicians rose to prominence as members of Davis´ ensembles, including Charlie Parker. Miles Davis is now considered the forefront of several major developments in bebop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion.
